Thomson Reuters sees revenues climb 11 percent

Thomson Reuters, a leading provider of financial data, said on Tuesday that sales and profits surged in the second quarter of the year despite challenging economic conditions.Revenue jumped 11 percent to 3.4 billion dollars (2.3 billion euros) in the three months to June 30, the newly formed group announced in an earnings statement.The result was on a comparable basis, meaning that they were calculated as if Thomson Corp and Reuters had already been trading as a combined group during the same period of last year.So-called pro-forma, underlying operating profit advanced by 15 percent to 708 million dollars in the second quarter.Canada's Thomson Corp completed its purchase of British-based media and information group Reuters last April in a deal agreed last year worth 8.7 billion pounds (11.5 billion euros, 17 billion dollars)."Our strong second-quarter results reflect continued momentum among our diverse set of businesses," said group chief executive Thomas Glocer in comments accompanying the results."We are encouraged by the robust revenue growth which we achieved despite the backdrop of a challenging economic environment."In light of our solid first-half results and continued positive sales momentum across the company, we are confident in confirming our full-year revenue and margin outlook."The group, which has 50,000 employees in 93 countries around the world, has previously forecast revenue growth of between six and eight percent this year.Thomson Reuters added that it was greatly benefiting from its leading positions in areas including foreign exchange, commodities, energy, corporate and emerging markets.However, shares fell 4.36 percent to 1,491 pence in late afternoon trading on London's FTSE 100 index, which was up 0.03 percent at 5,543.40 points.Thomson Reuters is the second biggest global provider of financial information, according to recent research from consultancy Inside Market Data, which showed it held 32.3 percent of the market in 2007. Bloomberg was the number one with a market share of 32.7 percent.The creation of Thomson Reuters combined Thomson Corp's presence in the United States with Reuters' penetration of markets for trading, financial and business information in Britain and continental Europe.The group spans sectors including accounting, finance, healthcare, law, media and science.

60% find new Nissan car ad inoffensive

A controversial TV commercial promoting a Japanese-made car in the Middle East should not be viewed as an insult to Arabs, according to the results of an Arabian Business poll.

The advert, which has been airing in Israel, depicts wealthy Arab oil barons cursing and hitting the Tiida, angered at the car being so fuel efficient.

And it has sparked a furore among Arabs in the Gulf states with some suggesting Nissan's cars should be boycotted as a result.

But nearly 60 percent of people who took part in our online poll on Saturday said the TV ad was funny and should not be taken as an insult.

And dozens of people making comments on our website story about the controversy share the view that the advert did not intend to cause offence.

Nissan Motor Company told Arabian Business on Saturday it had no prior knowledge of the advert prior to its showing on TV.

The car giant's Middle East division said it had not approved the TV advert and had taken action to ensure it never runs on the television again.

The TV commercial shows one of the wealthy Arabs pounding his fists on the car just to be held back by his companions as he screams at the vehicle "You destroyed my home! May God destroy your home! Hawks should peck at you day and night".

The commercial ends with a voice over saying: "It's clear the oil companies won't like you."

And 16 percent of respondents thought the ad was offensive and vowed never to buy a vehicle from Nissan again while another 12 percent said that while the ad portrayed Arabs in a stereotypical way, they were not too bothered about it because it was "just a TV commercial".

A further 13 percent thought it was just a cynical way of Nissan getting more publicity for the launch of their new Tiida range.

Arabian Business has received huge numbers of comments to this story, with most arguing that the advert was funny and shouldn't be taken as an affront to the Arab nation.

Josh M, of Dubai, said: "If more people in this world could laugh at themselves we as a race would be in a much better place. If you get angry at something as small as an advertisement jab at your culture your culture really needs to sit back and re-evaluate what is actually important to it."

And Anonymous Arab posted: "As an Arab I do not see this commercial as offensive in anyway. In fact, it is very humorous and I just had a laugh."

Passengers of Air Arabia, the first and largest low-cost carrier (LCC) in the Middle East and North Africa, can now select their choice of seat upon making a flight reservation. This new service, aimed at giving passengers greater choice, comes in the wake of this month's earlier announcement of an early check-in procedure. Air Arabia passengers can take advantage of the new seat selection service through all the available booking channels including websites, call centre, travel agencies and sales shops. The new service will be available for a nominal fee starting at AED 5.

Significant fall in growth but no recession for eurozone: IMF

The eurozone should escape a recession but growth is expected to fall significantly, the International Monetary Fund said in a report published Monday."Growth will likely slow substantially this year before reaccelerating" next year, the report from the IMF's executive board said.The "central scenario" underlying IMF, EU and European Central Bank projections "is for a significant slowdown, but no recession or prolonged period of sluggish activity," as seen in 2002-2005 the report said.The IMF predicted 1.7 percent growth in the 15-nation eurozone this year and 1.2 percent in 2009.Those figures include "a deceleration in the course of 2008 and a re-acceleration toward trend during 2009," it added.Last year eurozone growth was recorded at 2.6 percent.Eurozone inflation. at record highs due to high energy and food prices, "should fall appreciably from its current levels, although risks are high."Eurozone inflation nudged higher in July to a record 4.1 percent, according to a first official EU estimate last week.With oil trading at records close to 150 dollars a barrel this month, eurozone inflation hit the highest level since the bloc was formed in 1999.The IMF here too sees a return to norms next year moving "to below two percent some time in 2009," bringing it back in line with ECB targets.The IMF admitted that the ECB itself and the EU find this target "slightly optimistic."The Fund bases its predictions on energy and food prices stabilising next year.However an inflationary spiral, fuelled by high wage increases as consumers feel the pinch, remains a threat and therefore proactive measures are required, the IMF said in its report.IMF directors were split on the some of the tactics.Some called for interest rates to be kept on hold while others emphasised more "the importance of vigilance in the face of the upside risks to price stability," especially in the event of accelerating wage settlements.The European Central Bank will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday to fix interest rates.Economists were predicting that the ECB would not make a move on rates after raising its main lending rate to 4.25 percent last month to stem inflation.
